Welcome to the Health Ministries Association

Letter from the President

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FAITH COMMUNITY NURSES
The Health Ministries Association (HMA), which was incorporated in 1989, is the designated professional membership organization for faith community nurses.   It is your national professional membership organization.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) 2004 Congress on Nursing Practice and Economics defined criteria for Recognition of a Nursing Specialty.   There are 14 statements used by ANA for the review and decision-making processes to recognize an area of practice as a nursing specialty.  Number 14 states:  "Is organized and represented by a national specialty organization or branch of a parent organization”.

HMA met the 14 ANA criteria and is recognized by ANA as the national specialty organization for faith community nurses.  HMA worked with the ANA to write the Scope and Standards of Parish Nursing Practice in 1998 and the second edition, Faith Community Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice in 2005.  These two organizations share the copyright to these documents.   The Scope and Standards are being revised this year.

In addition to being the professional membership organization for faith community nurses, HMA membership is open to clergy, health ministers, and other community leaders working in health ministries.
